Service Description

Participants will learn the foundational elements of African-style marimba music and related genres. They will also spend a lot of time playing this music using pieces from a variety of styles and difficulty levels. Further attention will be paid to composing and arranging pieces for marimbas and Orff instruments so that teachers can create their own materials—relevant to their own classrooms and teaching situations. There will be discussions of the challenges and rewards of performing ethnic and ethnic-influenced music. Hot Marimba 2 builds on the skills and knowledge of the original Hot Marimba class, but Hot Marimba is by no means a prerequisite. Walt Hampton has brought this material to teachers on three continents and at every level—state, regional, national and international. Clock Hours: 32 clock hours/professional development hours will be offered through the Tri-Cities Steel Band Association (TCSBA.org), which is also the sponsoring organization. Each participant will receive a certificate of completion for the class, stating the dates, hours, etc. Some school districts honor these letters, some don’t. If you are concerned with clock hours, you will need to check with your district for their policy. All class times shown in Central Standard Time (CST).
