Meet Our Directors

ben-leggett2014Ben Leggett, Steel Drum Director

Ben Leggett directs Bram Bratá and OK2Botay, our two performing steel drum bands, and provides instruction for after school and summer steel drum classes. Ben received his B.A. degree in Music Education from Central Washington University. As an educator, he has extensively used traditional percussion instruments to foster excitement about music and develop core music skills in elementary students. He has taught numerous classes and workshops on steel drum, Latin drumming and Samba. Mr. Leggett is currently a music educator at White Bluffs Elementary School in Richland, Washington, where he teaches general music and directs The Limbo Fish steel band. An accomplished musician, Ben arranges or composes most of the music used in his classes and performing bands.

Walt Hampton, Marimba Director

Walt HamptonWalt Hampton directs both our performing Marimba bands, ‘Bahuru and ‘Baduku, and teaches after school and summer marimba classes. Walt received his Bachelor’s degree from Central Washington University and a Master’s in Music from the University of Washington. Walt teaches music at Sunset View Elementary School in Kennewick, Washington, where he also directs the SSV Rugare Marimba Ensemble. He is a sought-after clinician for music education conferences around the country. Walt has published two books of Zimbabwean-styled marimba music for children, Hot Marimba! and Marimba Mojo!.
